Police Blotter: Highland Police Plan DUI Checkpoint

According to a news release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, The Highland Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Friday, May 22, 2009, from 6:00PM to 2:00AM, at Base Line and Golondrina Drive in the City of Highland. In an effort to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes, DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving.

All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. This DUI/Drivers License checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies, as well as insuring drivers have a valid driver’s license. A major component of these checkpoints is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober designated drivers.

A DUI checkpoint is a proven effective method for achieving this goal. By publicizing these enforcement and education efforts, the Highland Police Department believes motorists can be deterred from drinking and driving.

Traffic volume and weather permitting, all vehicles may be checked and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be arrested. Our objective is to send a clear message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol and/or drugs – Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest. The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.

Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

San Manuel Donates $500,000 To Stalled Project

According to a release provided by The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians:

Mary’s Mercy Center together with San Manuel Band of Mission Indians is proud to announce the donation of $500,000 from San Manuel towards the construction of Veronica’s Home of Mercy II.

“This very generous donation will put our project back on track towards completion in the next 120 days” stated Father Mike Barry, president of Mary's Mercy Center. “The economy has dealt our Veronica’s Home ministry a one-two punch, so to speak. First our expansion was stalled, and secondly the demand for our services has increased as people lose their jobs and homes. We are forced to turn away women and children every day due to lack of space” stated Fr. Barry “This donation is a tremendous boost to Veronica’s Home, we can now move forward with construction which when completed will provide 80 additional beds to help serve the needs of the San Bernardino area.”

Veronica’s Home of Mercy I currently provides 40 beds for women and their children as well as education and counseling to transition families into self sufficiency. Programs such as GED preparation, drug and alcohol rehab and child development education emphasize growth and wellness for both the mothers and their young children.

“The people of The San Manuel Tribal Government are happy to provide this support to help make sure that there is a place in our community for mothers, when they have nowhere else to go,” said San Manuel Chairman James Ramos.

“With funding coming together we can now move forward towards a late summer completion of the project.” stated Terry Kent – VP of Crestwood Communities, volunteer construction management team.

Postmus To Enter Rehabilitation, Supervisors To Provide Their $495-An-Hour Report To Public

The Sun is reporting today that disgraced former San Bernardino County assessor Bill Postmus, who resigned amid allegations of drug abuse and cronyism at the Assessor's Office, said Friday he is checking himself into a drug-treatment center.

"I'm heading to the airport right now and am heading into a long, extensive rehabilitation," Postmus said late Friday.

Postmus, 37, rose to prominence in San Bernardino County politics at lightning speed and won a seat on the Board of Supervisors at the age of 28.

On Friday, he said he has struggled with drug addiction for the past three years. MORE>>

The Press-Enterprise reported on Friday that a report on the San Bernardino County assessor's office by a high-profile, $495-an-hour lawyer is due by the end of the month or early May, and some supervisors say they intend for it to be made public.

The district attorney's office, which has been conducting its own investigation of the assessor's office for more than a year, wants to keep the report private for a while longer.

District attorney spokeswoman Susan Mickey said investigators are concerned that release of the report could affect witness testimony during a trial, if and when charges are brought.

"We want to protect a fair trial," she said.

Supervisor Neil Derry, whose office was caught up in the assessor's scandal when his chief of staff was arrested, said withholding the report would give the impression of a cover up. The full report needs to be released, he said.

"It would be even more embarrassing if we didn't release the information to the public," Derry said. "The public paid for the investigation." MORE>>

P-E Purge: 40 Positions Cut At The Press-Enterprise

In a brief attributed to business writer Jack Katzanek online late Friday and in print on Saturday, The Press-Enterprise reports it laid off some 40 workers last week, more than half in the news department, due to a precipitous decline in ad revenues.  Ron Redfern, chief executive officer and publisher, stated:

"Like every company in our business, we continue to see revenues erode, and the corporation has seen revenues erode considerably. The determination was made we had to make cuts across the board."

The brief indicated this was the second round of layoffs at The Press-Enterprise in less than five months. About 30 employees were laid off in October after about 120 previously took voluntary buyouts. Redfern said future decisions on staffing levels would be on a month-to-month basis.

Veteran newsman/blogger Gary Scott lists the departed.

This after Dallas-based parent company A. H. Belo Corp. CEO Robert Decherd was awarded a raise in base salary from $250,000 to $600,000 in December. MORE>>

Police Blotter: Highland Sheriff's Station Urges "Situational Awareness" To Thwart Crime

According to a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department news release, during the months of December, January and February the City of Highland Sheriff’s station has noted an increase in thefts. These crimes include robberies from victims and burglaries from vehicles and residences throughout the city. We would like to encourage citizens to be aware of their surroundings and acknowledge their vulnerabilities.

High dollar valuables in plain sight coupled with a distracted victim lead to an easy boost. Several victims were walking down the street with Apple iPod® earphones in their ears. In several incidents the victim was unable to hear an oncoming attack. These distractions may have hindered the victim’s ability to defend themselves or retreat.

We would also like to encourage all citizens to be aware of leaving valuables inside of their parked vehicles. Valuables left in plain sight are continually targeted throughout the entire city. The Sheriff’s Office would encourage all Highland residents to take all valuables out of parked vehicles.

Situational Awareness is the key. Don’t become a victim.

Anyone with information about these incidents or similar incidents is urged to call Detective Yost at the Highland Police Station (909) 425-9793 or We Tip at 1-(800)-78-CRIME.

Jobs Tell Investors Appearance Is Hormone Imbalance & Simple Treatment Is Underway

Reuters is reporting that Apple CEO Steven Jobs, seen in recent months looking skinnier than a MacBook Air, sought to soothe investor concerns about his health on Monday, saying his weight loss was caused by a hormone imbalance that is relatively simple to treat.

Shares of Apple rose more than 5 percent in midday trade, as Jobs, a pancreatic cancer survivor, said he would remain CEO during his recovery and that his doctors expect him to regain his weight by late spring.

"I will be the first one to step up and tell our Board of Directors if I can no longer continue to fulfill my duties as Apple's CEO," Jobs said in a statement, breaking his silence about his health for the first time in months.

The statement followed widespread investor concern about the executive's health, after Jobs decided not to give the keynote speech at Apple product showcase Macworld this week. Speculation about his health resurfaced in June 2008, when Jobs appeared markedly thinner at an Apple event.

Jobs is seen as the driver of Apple's successful products, including Macintosh computers, iPod media players and iPhones.

He acknowledged he had been losing weight throughout 2008 and that his doctors determined "a hormone imbalance that has been 'robbing' me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy."

He said the remedy for "this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward" and that he has begun treatment. MORE>>
